Frequently Asked Questions

What is bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping is the recording of financial transactions. Transactions include; sales, purchases, receipts and payments by an individual or organisation. The two most common methods of bookkeeping are the single-entry and the double-entry bookkeeping systems.

Do I need a bookkeeper?

Every business, no matter how large or small, is required by law to record the financial transactions undertaken by an individual or organisation. This can be a huge task for any business and if not done so correctly can cause problems with income tax and VAT returns later. Self-employed individuals and people with a second income will, in most cases also need to keep financial records in order to complete and file a self-assessment tax return.

Do I need to complete a tax return?

If you have relatively straight forward tax affairs and already pay tax through PAYE (Pay As You Earn) you probably won’t need to complete a tax return. But if you have more complicated tax affairs – or income from several sources – you may need to complete one. Please note; if you are self-employed (including being a member of a partnership) you always have to complete a tax return. If you’re still unsure further information is available at HM Revenue & Customs website.

How do I register for self-assessment?

You should register with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) if you need to complete a self-assessment tax return. For example you may have started self-employment or letting property. HMRC will then decide if you need a tax return. If you do, they’ll set up your tax records and send you a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). Further information on registering for self-assessment is available at the HM Revenue & Customs website.

Why use a bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper can save you from the often time-consuming and repetitious, yet essential workload of recording financial transactions, enabling you to concentrate on the core business tasks and to focus on your customers.

What makes a good bookkeeper?

A good bookkeeper is one that records financial transactions of the business accurately, that has obtained qualifications recognised by professional institutions, and is honest and reliable. It is also someone who is approachable at all times and can communicate effectively in a ‘language’ you can understand.

Can you liaise with HMRC on my behalf?

Yes, when we start working with you we apply to act as your agent with HMRC. We can then speak to and correspond with HMRC on your behalf should the need arise.

What is the deadline for submitting my tax return?

When filing paper returns the deadline is the 31st October and when filing electronic returns online the deadline is the 31st January.
